Pulau Ubin Amazing Race (14 Sept 08) - Part 2

It wasn't all fun and games at the Amazing Race. After a day of rigorous activities full of teamwork, bonding and challenge, we dedicated time to debrief and reflection, sharing about each of our personal experiences, and discussing about what worked and what didn't...

Pulau Ubin Amazing Race! (14 Sept 08)

14th September 2008, the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival was a day many of us have been looking forward to! We all had high expectations of a day filled with fun, games and camaraderie, and we were not to be disappointed.

So early on a Sunday morning at 9am with bleary-eyed enthusiasm, we descended from all parts of Singapore to gather at Changi Village. All 34 of us, youths, volunteers and helpers. We started the day forming into our three groups “Dice”, “Black“ and “Thomas and Friends”. Also new to the team are six more youths who joined for the first time. After a round of introduction and the warm ups, we headed down to the bum boats for a 10 minute ride over to Pulau Ubin. Once we touched down we picked up our bikes and formed into our teams to prepare for our adventure race.

Over the next three hours we cycled round the island and played the game across five different stations. Under the watchful eye of the station masters, we poked, skipped, juggled, crawled, untangled through a series of activities which challenged us in our communication skills, teamwork and perseverance. Beyond that it also helped us to get to know each other better as we perspired, supported and encouraged each other through the activities.

After the last station we all had a group picture before heading back to mainland for a well deserved lunch at Changi Point where the eventual winners “Thomas and friends” were announced.
It was definitely a fruitful and fun-filled day for all volunteers and youths alike :) with many happy tired faces. Special thanks to the station masters and lunch brigade who sacrificed their Sunday to make the event possible for the expedition team!

Coming closer together now (7 Sept 08, Sunday)

Time. Commitment. Being present.

These are challenges I expected to come along, especially for the adult volunteers who not only have to juggle our fortnightly meetings, but also our weekly team activities. But week 3, and I see faces of enthusiasm, passion and excitement around me, keen to participate, gear up and go. There is no sense of grudging reluctance, only willingness. For me, these team activities are like an oasis amidst the sometimes-frustrating and stressful work of coordination and liaising. They refresh, recharge me, and remind me the reason why. I am reminded that I am around big-hearted people with so much to give, so much to contribute, and who have so much undying love for humanity to make the world a better place. I am blessed to be touched by these angels who selflessly devote their time and energy to leave their footprints in the sands of time.

Reflecting on our behaviour after the game.

Daphne's patience and gentleness really allows the learning to come through for us.

Testing our communication. Without seeing the shape, structure and layout outside, can we match what's inside...

...with what's outside? Building the vision, yet blind except for directions from our teammates, can we communicate? Can we trust? Can we work together?

Fast becoming a tradition - sharing our heartfelt takeaways and thoughts in the closing circle.

This week, what surprised me was how much the youths "got it". They knew and they understood why they were here, and they were clear about working together, about playing the games and allowing the games to bring about better understanding and awareness of themselves as well as each other. Sky said "Games is not just for fun. It's not about winning or losing the game, it's about how much you learn from the game". So well-said from someone so young. I'm humbled.

What's important this week is we created our buddy teams. We buddied up in 5 small teams so we have a support structure for the rest of the expedition! Strange how colours can say or mean so much. It was a very simple exercise... out of 5 different coloured papers, we each chose our own colour and went to the colour we preferred. And the personalities that gravitated to the same colours were uncannily... similar. So similar I was taken aback. I could see the perfection in the way the buddies teams were formed, and how well the people in each team complemented each other.

Not forgetting, it was Zhan Yang's birthday that day. Never expected him to turn up, or be present, but at 2.30pm, I was surprised to see him walk through the door, with a big grin and instantly bringing his trademark mischief to the team. Earlier in the day, one or two persons commented that without Zhan Yang, it's like the team suddenly seemed so quiet, so serious. I couldn't help but notice that... He is like our energizer and our battery, firing us up with his jokes, cheeky comments and readyness to participate. So, when he wasn't around in the first half of the day, something seemed missing. I've come to grow used to him stirring crazy fun in the team.

There is always learning, there is always growth... but end of the day, we also have fun. A fitting end to our half-day event: The CampVision dance!!! All us CampVision oldies are put to shame... because none of us can remember the dance steps, and it's none other than Kwang Yong leading us in the dance. Haha..

Dance, dance... synchronicity in motion, in heart and in vision. We live, we dream, we create, we inspire.

Till next week.

What Dreams May Come

If you were the idealistic do-gooder as I, and were presented with a magic wand that could grant the wildest and deepest of dreams, it would be for this world to be a harmonious place – one filled with people who are more pleasant, more giving and kinder in their ways and dealings with fellow beings less endowed with worldly possessions this dying planet is struggling to give.

Of course, to be able to wipe away poverty and suffering with the flick of a wand is but wishful thinking and something that only happens in bedtime stories and Disney movies adults would feed children with.

The real stories to be regaled by are the ones lived by people - experiences and journeys that have had love, commitment, frustration, blood, sweat and tears invested in a vision that people believe is worth realizing. Then it would no longer be a fairy tale. It would be REAL. It would be a moment in time where these people looked and saw that by what they gave and by who they are, they have made a difference, not just in the lives of others, but also in themselves.

And that, would be a reward more deserving than chancing upon a wand that allows one to ask for convenience over life’s precious lessons. We’ve jumped hoops in level one, there will be more that will come higher and faster. By then, this cosy team would be stronger to take on whatever comes, together.

At the session's closing: moving forward.

So here it is, for our kind supporters – Session 2 – a fruitful session of energetic jamming with hyperactive youths pumped on sugar. The pictures aren't much, and some faces blurred; but all with purpose to protect and preserve.

CV Expedition kicks off with a bang! :)

After a long wait of planning, coordination and even more planning, our 1st meeting with the youths finally came! :) It was an amazing and inspiring day, full of fun teamwork and bonding games, as well as the youths' curiosity and excitement about the expedition to Cambodia. Their energy was infectious, and I felt warmed by the enthusiasm I witnessed. I knew then that we had a really solid team, and time would only bring the group closer together.

Not to forget, we celebrated Ming's birthday during the tea break! Happy birthday, buddy! The day closed with reflection about what we wanted to achieve out of this expedition journey, as well as acknowledgement of each other. The reflection was personal, and deep. Hearing the different reasons that the youths had - to be a leader, to learn, to care for the kids in Cambodia, etc. etc. touched and connected me with the purpose of why we are all here together.

Because of you, this will be a memorable journey. Looking forward to our next event on 31 Aug 08 (Sun)!
